Description
Mestinon 60mg Tablets contain the active ingredient pyridostigmine bromide, a prescription medication that treats myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune disorder causing muscle weakness and fatigue. As an orally active cholinesterase inhibitor, it works by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential for muscle contraction, thereby improving nerve impulse transmission at the neuromuscular junction and enhancing muscle strength. Pyridostigmine is also used for other off‑label indications such as paralytic ileus and post‑operative urinary retention. Each 60mg tablet allows for individualised dosing to maximise relief during periods of greatest weakness.
Key Features
-
Active Ingredient: Contains pyridostigmine bromide 60mg, a well‑established cholinesterase inhibitor.
-
Effective for Myasthenia Gravis: Specifically indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis, a condition that causes muscles to weaken or fatigue easily.
-
Proven Mechanism: Inhibits the destruction of acetylcholine, allowing freer transmission of nerve impulses across the neuromuscular junction to help strengthen muscles.
-
Longer Duration: Offers a longer duration of action and fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to older agents like neostigmine.
-
Flexible Dosing: The 60mg strength allows for customised dosing (usually 5 to 10 tablets daily) to provide relief when maximum strength is needed.
-
Prescription Only: A prescription-only medicine (POM) that must be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider.
